Belmont Club » No way out

he size of federal spending has been growing inexorably, under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Often Human Resources spending has grown faster under Republicans than it has with Democrats. The difference is in the atmospherics. The Republicans have increased the size of government while moaning with regret in the manner of the walruses eating the oysters in Alice in Wonderland. Liberals on the other hand, have rubbed their hands with glee at each expansion. But attitudes aside, both have increased it just the same.

There are, alas, many in the west for whom all this is music to their ears. Whether through wickedness, ideology, stupidity or derangement, they firmly believe that the ultimate source of conflict in the world derives at root from America and Israel, whose societies, culture and values they want to see emasculated or destroyed altogether. They are drooling at the prospect that an Obama presidency will bring that about. The rest of us can’t sleep at night.

Crappy Products by Google

Google faces far less risk in product development than the usual business does. It routinely introduces half-finished products and services as online “betas” because it knows that, even if the offerings fail to win a big share of the market, they will still tend to produce attractive returns by generating advertising revenue and producing valuable data on customer behavior. For most companies, a failed launch of a new product is very costly. For Google, in general, it’s not. Failure is cheap.

Beware Global Freezing!

In the past 1000 years, three previous such events -- the Dalton, Maunder, and Spörer Minimums, have all led to rapid cooling. One was large enough to be called a "mini ice age". For a society dependent on agriculture, cold is more damaging than heat. The growing season shortens, yields drop, and the occurrence of crop-destroying frosts increases.

Russia on the verge of decline

Oil production is set to decline this year for the first time in a decade, a decline that is widely expected to accelerate rapidly in 2010. Of Russia's 14 largest oil fields, seven are more than 50% depleted. Production at its four largest gas fields is also in decline. Russia drilled about four million feet of new wells last year. In 1990, it drilled 17 million.

...For much of its history, Russia has been a weak state masquerading as a strong one -- a psychological profile in insecurity.

Voter Resource Group Slams McCain Over Tax Allegations - Small Business

However, Jackson said McCain is right to say that many small-business owners would see their taxes increase if Obama is elected and raises the top income-tax rates. Many small firms are legally organized in a way that would require them to pay taxes on their business income as individuals, rather than as a corporation. But since Obama's plan wouldn't affect couples making less than $250,000, or singles making less than $200,000, the new rules would affect only a fraction of the 23 million small business owners McCain has cited, probably less than about 660,000, according to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

See any declines, George? More down than up? I only see up!

How about jobs? The unemployment rate when Arnold made that statement was 5.5%. Today, it's 5.5%. At the time, there were 139.6 million people employed in this country. Today, it's 145.9 million. And, employers added jobs to their payrolls in 41 of the last 47 months since the 2004 RNC."
